Greetings from Bengaluru!

My flights were all fine – no problems with layovers or my luggage. Amen for that! In the airport in Bangalore, I met a woman from Vancouver who recently lost her job with the federal government. She has come to India for 6 months to explore other opportunities. We had a great conversation about Chalice. Everyone I met along the way has been wonderful – my seat mate on the flight from Toronto to Frankfurt, the nice couple I sat next to on the flight from Frankfurt to Bangalore, very helpful people in airports, and especially Sr. Deepa and Christy, who were waiting for me patiently at the airport.

My flight landed at 2:10 am or so and I waited for over an hour for my luggage. We made it back to the Convent around 4. The drive from the airport was... well, interesting! So far I’ve learned that the speed limit signs are merely decorations, the most important feature on a vehicle is its horn and green AND red both mean go... Our driver was excellent and I think he toned down his ‘skills’ for my sake.

Upon arrival to my home away from home I was shown my room and left to clean myself up and sleep. What a welcome luxury both of those things were! I have a private washroom off of my room. I have a clean and comfy bed. And I even have hot water! Sr. gave me a quick tour of the Convent and I saw the Chalice office (the Kerala Site’s central office*). The Srs. have a few rooms here that they use as accommodations for foreigners or people visiting the city. Presently there are 3 Germans here for a few days.

This morning, after a breakfast of some interesting things, Sr. Deepa and I went out to get my phone activated. That was an adventure in itself. While Bangalore was sleeping last night when I arrived, it was certainly alive and bustling this morning! I think my life flashed before my eyes as we were crossing the road (okay, an exaggeration, but it was quite a rush!). Back at the Convent we had a lovely lunch of fish, noodles, curry and beans. Sr. was thoughtful and made me a dish of curry, a dish of green beans and some fish that were not spicy... she ended up eating them herself because I loved the masala beans and the ‘normal’ curry was delicious!

The temperature here is very comfortable. Last night it was about 15 degrees – which to the locals is one step away from igloos and polar bears! Today it’s about 20. Sr. tells me that it is hotter and more humid on the coast, which is where we are headed in a few days. Bring on the heat!

This evening we will take the overnight train north to Bellary. I brought a big bag of clothes, blankets and toys with me. We’ll take most of it with us tonight. The blankets and toys we will save for the children at the special school. We’ll spend one night in Maski and visit some of the Kerala Site sub-sites there.* Then the overnight train back to Bangalore, where we’ll catch a flight to Kochi – on the coast. The following week will be spent traveling down the coast, before returning back to Bangalore for the Regional Directors’ Meeting.

I’m going to take the opportunity of having some down time this afternoon to rest. The next few weeks are going to be a whirlwind and I am absolutely exhausted. Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes! I carried them all with me the whole way here and they certainly made my journey easier.

*While the Kerala Site’s central office and some of the sub-sites are in Karnataka state, most of the subs are in Kerala state. And even though I am in Bangalore City, I won’t be visiting any of the Bangalore Site locations – they are spread out over 5 or 6 states, only a few of them in Karnataka.

The night before

It's 9:30 pm and I am pretty well ready to go. My bag is packed and Julie is finishing up a super-playlist of good music for my looooong journey. There is lots left to prepare for my presentations at the Regional Meeting, but that will fall into place.

As I sit here looking at the Christmas tree my kittens have all but destroyed, I can't believe that when I get home it will be the week before Christmas. It makes me excited to know that so soon after arriving home I will be surrounded by family and friends.

I can't quite describe how I'm feeling right now. I suppose it is a mix of anticipation and disbelief. There is so much to look forward to over the next month. Advent has always been a time of great anticipation for me. This Advent I will be reflecting on all of the blessings in my life in a way I've never done before.

My flight leaves Halifax tomorrow afternoon (Nov 28) at 3:15 pm. I will arrive in Bangalore at 12:21 am on Nov 30 (India time). The duration of my travel is 26 hours. Keep me in your prayers for the next couple of days.

Getting ready to go... to INDIA!

It's Friday afternoon. All week I've been thinking about the things I need to do before I leave for India. It's time to shift from thinking about them... to doing them! Getting this blog started is one thing I can cross off my list. :) Amen!

On Wednesday, 28 November I will fly from Halifax to Toronto to Frankfurt to Bangalore City to spend 2 1/2 weeks visiting Chalice's Kerala Sponsor Site and presenting at a Regional Meeting of our Site Directors. How blessed am I to have this awesome opportunity!

12 years ago I started volunteering with Chalice in our Springhill, NS office. At that time it was called Christian Child Care International (CCCI). I was in High School and visited the office at Christmastime with the Girl Guide group I belonged to. We posted Christmas cards made by the sponsored children for their sponsors in Canada. After that first evening I was hooked! I arranged to come afterschool a few times each week to help in the office. My first duties were filing and stuffing envelopes. I remember being so amazed at learning about the lives of people in countries I had never even heard of... When I was in University I worked 2 summers at Chalice as a Summer Student (2003 and 2005). I helped in almost every aspect of the office and got a crash course on many things! By this time Chalice had become part of my extended family. In 2007 just before I returned home from a year abroad I contacted Jackie (the Office Manager in Springhill) to see if there were, by chance, any job openings. There were not. So I started working at my old job (Tim Horton's). Before I even went in for my first shift Jackie tracked me down to tell me the good news! There was an opening in the Finance Department, processing donations, and she wanted me to come for an interview. God is so good and the job was the perfect fit for me. I was back with family and working in a field I felt called to be in. (As a side note, Jackie likes to boast about the influence CCCI had on me when I was in University... my Chemistry degree morphed into an International Relations and Religious Studies degree! If she only knew just how much of an influence my time in her office was...)

In the five years since I started working full-time I have worked in the Finance Department processing donations, been a Sponsor Representative for India and the Philippines - linking sponsors to their sponsored children and supporting the Site staff with sponsorship administration - and am presently the International Department Administrator in our Lower Sackville office - supporting our three International Managers. I've always dreamed of meeting some of our partners and some of the beneficiaries of our programmes. That dream is coming true... very soon!

Join me on my journey to southern India as I travel around the states of Karnataka and Kerala, visiting some of the families who participate in our programme, experiencing life in rural India and urban slums, visiting a devadasi village (I'll explain more about devadasis when I am there - in the meantime, check out the Wikipedia page. We all know the pros and cons of Wikipedia... but the opening paragraph seems to give a good overview. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devadasi), dropping in on our Skills@Chalice initiative (see the latest edition of the Chalice newsletter - page 3 http://www.chalice.ca/images/stories/newsletters/newsletterfall2012.pdf), sightseeing at the Backwaters of Kerala and the Alappuzha Sea (this area is referred to as the 'Venice of the East' - I loved the Venice of the West, so this should be amazing!), bringing blankets and teddy bears to children at the Holy Cross Special School and delivering workshops on Sponsorship Administration and Results Based Management to our wonderful Site Directors at a Regional Meeting. The whole time I will be 'shepherded' by the lovely Sr. Deepa (see her lovely face below) and staying in Holy Cross Convents all over southern India. Until next time...
